The Lahti Institute of Design provides Milan with
A GLIMPSE OF NORTHERN LIGHTS

The ambience of the Black Room by the Institute of Design presents design from north of the 60 N latitude, where the darkness of the winter is long and the light of the summer bright. The light in the north has countless shades.

The Institute of Design educates communication and design professionals for the needs of society, trade and industry.

The education has a strong basis in the visual arts and humanities. Instruction is practical and hands-on. The education has a human-scale approach, combining usability and ergonomics with the Scandinavian Functionalist tradition.

The Lahti Institute of Design boasts a strong status in the Nordic design industry. Our graduates currently work in key positions around the world in such companies as Honda, Luhta, Marimekko, Nokia, Hennes & Mauritz and Leonardo.

The Black Room in Milan is constructed around the theme of quietness. The designs on display were selected by an external jury consisting of the designer Harri Koskinen and Professor Timo Salli from the Degree Programme of Applied Art and Design in the University of Art and Design Helsinki. The intention of the selection was to present the profile, values and competence of the Institute, as well as to promote the image of Finland.
