Are Your Problems our Problems? Reflections on the Implementation of a Post Graduate PBL Course

Problem-based Learning (PBL) is becoming increasingly utilised in UK nurse education. However there is a paucity of research literature focussing on the use of PBL in the education of mental health nurses specifically. Within the department of Mental Health & Learning Disability at the University of Sheffield a three year research project is being undertaken which will address this gap in our knowledge. This project will evaluate the implementation of what is believed to be the first Pre Registration Post Graduate Mental Health Nursing PBL curriculum in England.

This paper, utilising data gathered from a ‘patchwork’ of sources, including reflective diaries will illuminate the ‘lived experience’ of mental health nursing lecturers involved in the implementation of this programme and its evaluation.

A central theme will be to suggest that the adoption of this ‘facilitative pedagogy’ is not only an innovation but an attempt to ‘reclaim’ educational skills arguably dormant since nurse training was absorbed into Higher Education. The authors will not only highlight issues specific to their educational field but will also explore these themes in relation to the wider context of PBL.
